FAQs
- Should I have to LOOK around to find the right therapist?
- Yes, potentially. Since therapy is so much about the relationship you form with your therapist, one therapist might be amazing for one person and fairly ineffective with another. Many, including myself, offer a fifteen minute phone consult for you to get a feel for the potential fit.
- Does therapy work?
- That's a resounding ‘yes”. There is a huge amount of evidence that supports the effectiveness of therapy. See PACFA's statement on Evidence-based Practice here: https://pacfa.org.au/portal/Publications-and-Research/Evidence-Informed-Practice-Statement/Portal/Publications-and-Research/Res-Proj/EIPS.aspx?hkey=2fd6bf42-5a14-4274-9138-8fb840610de1
- How long is each session?
- A session lasts 55 minutes.
- Do you bulk bill?
- I am not a psychologist so you can’t claim on medicare with me. I am however, priced accordingly.
- Can I use a Mental Health Care Plan with you?
- Yes and No. One reason for a Mental Health Care Plan is so you can have the price reduced for therapy from a psychologist. I have a rate that is affordable in the first place. I have trusted Psychologist colleagues to whom I can refer you should we decide you need psychological testing or diagnosis for example.
- How long does someone usually work with a Psychotherapist or Counsellor?
- Anywhere between one hour and fifty years!
- What is Group Therapy?
- Group is a powerful way to do therapy with individuals sharing similar goals or needs. The group is structured so that each member feels safe to share about themselves and receive support and feedback from the members.
- Do you charge a cancellation fee?
- Yes, sometimes. Part of maintaining a safe relationship is to respect each other's boundaries and to be accountable. Therapy is a commitment, to the therapist, but most importantly to oneself.
- Do you work with children and adolescents, couples or families?
- No. These are specialist areas that need specific training. My experience and specialised training is in trauma, addiction and group therapy.
- Can my GP talk to you before I see you?
- Absolutely.
